What happens in Carnival of Souls?

Carnival of Souls is Mary’s “dream-like” last moment. Mary looks to have miraculously escaped the automobile disaster, but the film reveals she is different. Mary seems to live in an “otherworldly” or “parallel reality” Gene Moore’s spooky organ music punctuates Carnival of Souls’ bizarre mood. This dissonant organ soundtrack, a blend of bizarre carnival music and off-kilter funeral dirge, creates a disturbing tone that separates Mary’s ethereal life from reality. This difference between fantasy and reality is shown when Mary turns on the vehicle radio while traveling to Salt Lake City.

Only a grotesque organ soundtrack plays in her thoughts, not the vehicle radio. Later in the film, Mary plays the church organ to Gene Moore’s continuous music. She performs scary, gloomy organ music. Mary looks in a hypnotic trance, wide-eyed and zombie-like, swaying from side to side, unable to halt or control the organ music whirling around her — driven by images of “the guy” and other ghouls to the scary old carnival pavilion.
