Who Found System of a Down?

System of a Down was formed in the mid-’90s in Southern California by vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan. They immediately gained a significant following in Los Angeles, mostly due to positive word of mouth. A three-song demo started circulating among metal enthusiasts, and their fan base quickly expanded not just in America, but also in Europe and New Zealand.

By the end of 1997, the band had signed with American Records, which was distributed by Columbia Records. In the summer of 1998, American/Columbia released the band’s self-titled debut, landing them opening slots on the Slayer and Ozzfest tours. System finally reached platinum, thanks to alternative radio songs “Sugar” and “Spiders,” and led to the September 2001 release of the even more ambitious Toxicity. System’s second album was another heavy music smash, eclipsing the bulk of their nu-metal opponents and earning multi-platinum status throughout the globe.
