Neutrality is the antithesis of conflict. First, it must avoid alliances or accords that obligate it to help beligerent nations.

In 1815–1914, European history was a dynamic pattern of alliances known as ‘The balance of power’ Nations created alliances to guarantee that countries they feared didn’t make stronger alliances.

Britain, France, and Russia joined against Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire by 1914. (Turkey). Austria-Hungary interfered against Russia’s Orthodox ally Serbia. Russia attacked A-H. Germany, France, and Britain followed. Alliances meant to avert war sparked a global conflict.

Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Portugal, and Switzerland proclaimed neutrality and avoided WWI. Not their struggle.

After WWI, the hazards of alliances were apparent, and expectations switched to collective security – the League of Nations and after WWII, the UN. In 1939, despite widespread criticism of aggressiveness, war broke out.

Collective security may also be represented through NATO, however others claim it damages it.

Neutrality requires maintaining prior trade patterns and not joining the belligerents. Neutral Sweden was condemned in Britain for continuing to provide steel and ball-bearings to Germany, but Sweden contended that this was a continuation of pre-war commerce.
