The Empire Strikes Back on Hoth
Hoth is a fictitious ice planet in the Star Wars universe. It debuted in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back and has since featured in Star Wars literature and video games.
Hoth is the location of the Rebel Alliance’s secret Echo Base, which is partly constructed in natural tunnels produced by huge ice bubbles in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back. The Rebels ride indigenous tauntauns to patrol the planet. A wampa attacks Luke Skywalker and his tauntaun at the beginning of the film. Han Solo finally rescues Skywalker after he flees. The Rebels are forced to flee when one of the Galactic Empire’s probe droids discovers the outpost. The Empire comes and sends ground troops to attack the facility, but the Rebels use ground artillery and snowspeeders to halt the AT-ATs and successfully escape them. This war is known colloquially as the “Battle of Hoth.”
Leigh Brackett’s initial draft of The Empire Strikes Back included an opening scene with Luke Skywalker on the ridge of an ice world, albeit the cloud planet was given the name “Hoth” at the time. Hoth’s wampas were also portrayed as assaulting the Rebel stronghold in the draft.
