Sarah Jessica Parker is a distant descendant of a woman accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials, though she was unaware of this at the time of filming.

She is Esther Elwell’s tenth great-granddaughter. In 1692, Esther was accused of witchcraft. Fortunately for Mrs. Elwell, the witch trials had gotten so out of hand by the time she was arrested that the mob was even attempting to arrest the governor’s wife for witchcraft. She was eventually released and lived into her 80s, a very respectable old age for a 17th-century American colonist.

Sarah Jessica Parker, on the other hand, didn’t discover this until nearly twenty years after filming Hocus Pocus. In 2010, she appeared as a guest on the premiere of NBC’s genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are? where experts demonstrated how far back they could trace her ancestors.
