Who is Surtur?

 

Surtur was a Fire Demon, Lord of Muspelheim, and the initiator of Ragnarök. Odin vanquished Surtur thousands of years ago, bringing the Eternal Flame back to Asgard and locking Surtur to Muspelheim for 5,000 years. A crippled Surtur planned to unleash Ragnarök when Odin disappeared during the Second Dark Elf Conflict, but Thor destroyed him. Loki revived him with the Eternal Flame to slay Hela. Surtur fulfilled the prophesy of Ragnarök by destroying Asgard, killing Hela and himself in the process. Surtur was a nasty, cold, soulless, remorseless, diabolical man who would murder friend or foe. He personified devastation; he utilized his great abilities against his adversaries and had no fear of destroying anything in his path, suggesting that Ragnarök must come and only he can achieve it.

Surtur seems dedicated to bringing Ragnarök by destroying Asgard. When it came time to begin Ragnarök, he wasn’t even aware that Asgard was empty. He even committed suicide to destroy Asgard.
