Pua Moana Disney
Pua appears as a supporting character in Disney’s 2016 animated feature film Moana. He is Moana’s pet pig with a pot belly and his greatest pal.
The filmmakers got the idea for a pig character from their research visits to the South Pacific islands, where they discovered that pigs and roosters often accompanied wayfinders on their journeys. As a consequence, Pua and Moana’s rooster pal Heihei were cast as comedic relief sidekicks. In prior versions of the film, Pua had a much greater part and accompanied Moana on her quest to locate Maui and repair the heart of Te Fiti, with Heihei, who had a disdain for both Pua and Moana.
A deleted sequence also depicts the beginnings of Moana and Pua’s romance. Pua’s health was deteriorating as a newborn member of the island’s livestock because he did not eat. When Moana attempted to feed him, her father Tui resisted, saying, “You can’t force him to eat.” Moana grabs Pua and baby feeds him herself to save the piglet. She then gives him a name and declares him her pet.
