King Kong is a fictitious enormous gorilla-like monster that has been featured in different media since 1933. He has been nicknamed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” a term popular in Hollywood. His initial appearance was in RKO Pictures’ novelization of the 1933 picture King Kong, which premiered a little more than two months later. The picture gained widespread praise at its first release and subsequent re-releases. The Son of Kong, starring Little Kong, was released the next year. Toho released King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), which featured a huge Kong facing Toho’s Godzilla, as well as King Kong Escapes (1967), which was largely based on Rankin/Bass’ The King Kong Show (1966-1969). Dino De Laurentiis made a contemporary version of John Guillermin’s original film in 1976. A decade later, King Kong Lives, starring Lady Kong, was released.
