High School Musical Movie Music
High School Musical is an American musical television film that was released in 2006 and directed by Kenny Ortega. Peter Barsocchini was the writer for the film. The film is the first episode in the High School Musical series and the 63rd Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM). Starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman, the film was produced by Disney Channel. Both Troy Bolton (played by Zac Efron), the captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez (played by Hudgens), an academically gifted transfer student, compete for the lead roles in their school musical in the movie High School Musical. This competition causes friction between the various social groups at the school.
After seeing the critical and audience success of stand-alone musical episodes in their television programs Even Stevens (2000–2003) and That’s So Raven (2003–2007), officials at the Disney network sought to replicate that success with their feature films. This led to the development of the film. Utah served as the setting for the majority of the principal shooting for the High School Musical. Some of the places used for filming in Utah include East High School, Murray High School, and Salt Lake City. Los Angeles served as the location for some additional shooting. Numerous reviewers, including Barsocchini, have referred to the movie as a contemporary retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story.
It premiered on January 20, 2006, as part of the “Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance Week” block on Disney Channel, and immediately became the Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) with the highest level of commercial success ever made. The first broadcast of High School Musical in the United States attracted 7.7 million people, which was a record-breaking number at the time for the network’s largest debut audience. The movie was also very successful in other parts of the world; as of the year 2019, it was estimated that over 225 million people all around the world have viewed High School Musical. The movie was met with largely mixed reviews from reviewers, with acclaim for its actors and music but criticism for its sentimentality; audiences, however, responded more favorably to the picture. The motion picture’s soundtrack was a financial and critical triumph, climbing to the top of the United States Billboard 200 chart, with its first song, “Breaking Free,” reaching number four on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart. In August of 2007, a sequel titled High School Musical 2 was made available to the public.
