The Origin of Rainbow Flag
Gilbert Baker, who was born in 1951 and reared in Parsons, Kansas, served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972. After being discharged with distinction, Baker trained himself to sew. Baker met Harvey Milk, a renowned homosexual advocate, in 1974. Milk later challenged Baker to create a sign of pride for the LGBT community.
The first gay pride flags were flown during the Gay Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco on June 25, 1978. Prior to that incident, while reflecting a tragic chapter in the history of homosexuality, the Pink triangle had been used as a symbol for the LGBT community. The pink triangle was employed by the Nazi authorities to identify and stigmatize gay males incarcerated in concentration camps. Instead of depending on a Nazi instrument of tyranny, society searched for a new motivating emblem.
